Comodo Firewall

Comodo Firewall ScreenshotVersion tested:  2.3.5.62

Another program in Comodo’s stable of free software is it’s Comodo Firewall, which provides protection against trojans, identity theft hackers, malicious scripts, and other external and internal threats.

I am a sucker for software that looks really cool and professional and is effective to boot, all of which can be said about this one. From what I’ve read in multiple sources the level and sophistication of this software’s protection is very high. I’ve been using this one for about a month now and am very satisfied with it, despite a few annoying bugs that were there initially, not least one where the Firewall prevented me from accessing the internet. This has been taken care of in recent updates, though.

Note: Comodo seems to have had problems with a component that came with their software that was difficult to uninstall, but that has since been removed (see my Comodo Antivirus posting). You will also have to provide an email address for them to email you your free activation code. I did this without problems, but you can use a service such as mailexpire to provide you with a temporary email address that will work as well.

Visit the features page from the developer’s site for in-depth features.

A free alternative to: Norton Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro, etc…

    Hi Samer,
I had Comodo running on my computer took it off (or thought I had) to try out Zone Alarm Plus. When I went to reinstall Comodo it said I already had it on??? Now I can’t for the life of me get it back on!
    Help!
I should have stayed with Comodo!! :-(

Registering the free version via email is no longer true, as comodo pro doesn’t need to be registered as of january ‘07. Use this link instead.

I installed Comodo on all my computers ever since Zone Alarm became highly buggy. With Zone Alarm installed, I could guarantee that at least 3 times a day I would get a “True Vector has encountered a fatal error and needs to close” without doing anything. Once that error popped up, my internet would completely shut down and I would have to totally reboot to get it back. And Zone Alarm’s forums are full of people having the same True Vector instability problems with no solutions. It’s sad that the best free firewall has turned to crap with the company’s sale to Check Point. Comodo is far more stable and a much better firewall solution now.

I have been using this software for a while on one of my computers and it was easy to configure, and has done a nice job so far.

Updated test results show that this is indeed the best firewall out there. http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-personal-firewall-analysis/leak-tests-results.php

That leak test referenced is really old. It rates version 1, but Comodo is on version 3.

Hi you should check out Online Armour. It is one of the few firewalls that passes the leak test 100%, and seems to be less of a memory hog than Comodo. (And its free!)No problems with it so far on XP.

I have to agree with ‘Tom’ above - “Online Armor” is GREAT, does VERY well in tests, and is MUCH ‘less intrusive’ than “Comodo” - It doesn’t ask “Do you want to allow…” EVERY time a new app or function opens!
    Oddly [?], it LOOKS a lot like Comodo - Hmmm….. ;-)

Can’t say about Online Armour, but I like Comodo. It does everything I want, and shows running processes. Nice for catching funny stuff. I had just about given up on finding a good freeware firewall with Rules for ports, Packet inspection

It is a bit “naggy”, but it is bearable. If that is an issue just don’t let it install the “Defence ” part.(Prompted for during install). Then it is just a VERY good firewall. Will check out online armour though just to compare. Meanwhile thanks Samer. Good job.
