#13: PDFMate Converter free

This converter is ranked #13 in our comparison of free PDF to Word converter tools (i.e. out of 16 converters, it is #13).

One of three ‘true’ desktop based PDF to Word converters on our list (since OpenOffice and LibreOffice do not actually convert to PDF). PDFMate will deliver a good conversion for simple documents, but gets bogged down if your document contains elements such as formatting/images/tables, and in fact gets low marks in all the technical comparisons that we have used in this article. Much as I wanted it to get a better score, it has to be listed as ‘tier 3’ tool.

PDFMate Converter free

Overall Rating: C. TIER 3.
Desktop vs. Online: Desktop (Windows).
Converts to (file type): .DOC; EPUB; HTML; SWF; IMAGE; TEXT.
Handling of Text: D Handling of Images: D Handling of Tables: C
Reliability: A OCR Support: No Max File Size: No limit
Is it Free?: Yes.
Where to download?: download on this page.
Strengths: A desktop-based free PDF to Word converter (which is a rarity). Converts to many other formats not just DOC (converts to SWF fairly decently).
Weaknesses: handling of text/images/tables is not very advanced and cuts corners (compared to tools higher up on this list). Promises PDF to EPUB conversions but these did not open in ebook readers when we tested (although this does not relate to its PDF to Word functionality).
